Other Desert Cities Opens January 16 at Bellevue Little Theatre
‘Other Desert Cities’ directed by Adam J. Fulbright will open Friday, January 16 at the Bellevue Little Theatre in Olde Towne Bellevue and will run for three weekends, closing on February 1. The curtain is 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings and 1 pm on Sunday.
This drama, by Jon Robin Baitz, premiered Off-Broadway in January 2011 and transferred to Broadway in November 2011. The play was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Other Desert Cities involves a family with differing political views and a long-held family secret originating in the tumultuous 1960s. Brooke Wyeth returns home to Palm Springs after a six-year absence to celebrate Christmas with her parents, her brother, and her aunt. Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir that will dredge up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history — a wound her parents don’t want reopened. In effect, Brooke draws a line in the sand and dares her parents to cross it.
Family tension results, and the desert of California erupts with the ensuing conflict. The parents, Lyman and Polly, have kept a secret for years, and when it is revealed, the results are shattering. Trip, the unsuspecting brother, is caught up in the conflict, as is Silda, the recovering alcoholic aunt. This pair is wrapped into the events and seem overwhelmed by the tension.
This play is an intense and revealing of private thoughts and actions, and it contains strong language which is not suitable for children. The biting dialogue is intense and the interaction between family members is riveting.
