Bellevue Police Investigate Thursday Morning Shooting

On Thursday, November 13, 2025, at approximately 10:27 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 3700 block of Groves Road in response to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 67-year-old male victim, later identified as Richard Christensen, suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Mr. Christensen, who is considered to be in critical condition, was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) by Bellevue Medical Personnel. A second victim, 66-year-old male, John Benak, sustained a gunshot wound to his left arm. Mr. Benak was also transported to UNMC for treatment. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The shooting suspect has been identified as 64-year-old Mary Christensen, the sister of Richard Christensen. Mr. Benak is not related to Mary Christensen but is both her landlord and roommate. Mary Christensen was still on scene upon officers’ arrival and was taken into custody without incident. Mary Christensen was booked into the Sarpy County Jail for two counts of First-Degree Assault and two counts of Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony. No further information will be released at this time, as this incident is still under investigation.

Bellevue police are investigating a Thursday morning shooting that left two people injured.

Officers and medics were dispatched to a residential area near 38th Avenue and Grove Road — close to 37th Street and Groves Road, just northwest of 36th Avenue and Giles Road — after receiving reports of gunfire.

Authorities said the situation has been contained and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Officials also confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody.

Police initially reported no details about possible injuries, but later confirmed that two people had been wounded.
