Sarpy County Encourages Residents to Consider Postmark Update When Mailing Documents
Sarpy County is encouraging residents and business owners to plan ahead when submitting time-sensitive mail to the county.
Under updated guidance, the U.S. Postal Service cannot guarantee that the date a piece of mail is dropped in a box or given to a carrier will be the date reflected on the postmark. This change could affect mail sent to the county with a postmark deadline, which may include property tax payments, property valuation protest forms, mail-in voter registration forms and more.
“We’re urging residents to take extra precautions when mailing documents that rely on a postmark to ensure their submissions meet statutory or regulatory deadlines,” said Sarpy County Commissioner Gary Mixan. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation, as it can save them from being late and facing a penalty.”
To help avoid late filings or delinquent payments, consider the following:
- Using electronic or online services whenever available to ensure timely submission.
- Mail items early, allowing additional time ahead of deadlines.
- Request a postmark in person at the post office when mailing time-sensitive documents.
- Consider optional mailing services such as certified mail, registered mail or a certificate of mailing for added documentation and assurance.
