Sarpy County Introduces New Property Fraud Alert Service 

The Sarpy County Register of Deeds is offering a new alert service that helps safeguard local property owners against fraud. 

Property fraud is a type of identity theft that involves scammers forging documents so it appears that they own your property, which can have serious consequences for the true owner.  

Register of Deeds and County Clerk Amber Houghtaling said the county proactively launched the service before the problem takes root locally.  

“Property fraud is essentially someone attempting to steal your house. It’s a growing concern nationally, and unfortunately, it’s easy for property owners to overlook,” Houghtaling said. “The county is offering this alert service to help property owners spot fraud and act quickly to mitigate the issue.” 

Sarpy County residents can sign up for Fraud Notify, a free notification service that provides early warning of property fraud being committed in your name or the name of your business. 

The alert system will send subscribers an automated email, which will notify you any time a recording has been filed. The alert will contain a hyperlink of the document image, so you can determine if the document recorded is legitimate or fraudulent and then take action, if necessary. 

Sign up for Fraud Notify alerts online. The system will prompt you to create a user account before you can subscribe to the alerts.  

If you suspect you are the victim of a property fraud scheme, alert the FBI via the online Crime Complaint Center, contact local law enforcement, and speak to a real estate attorney. Report the fraud to the Register of Deed’s Office and notify your title insurance provider if you have coverage.
