New Aquarium Debuts at Bellevue Library
The new 150-gallon aquarium is much bigger than the 55-gallon tank in the old library. Ruff Water Aquarium Services designed a tank that has live plants, fish, and snails. A wooden decorative tree root structure makes the aquarium unique.
This addition was part of the library’s vision since the early stages of planning for the new facility. Back in October 2022, the Library Foundation’s Fundraising Committee launched a campaign to bring this vision to life. Thanks to their efforts, they were able to purchase a used aquarium and began collecting donations to fund the project. Donations were made at the circulation desk or by dropping cash into the aquarium. A former employee made a generous donation in honor of her late husband.
A highlight of the fundraising efforts took place on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, during National Library Week. The Junior Friends of the Library showcased their talents by producing and performing The Rainbow Fish: A Stage Adaptation. Following the performance, they hosted a bake sale, all proceeds were donated towards the purchase of the new aquarium.
Meet Hoover: Our Resident Senior Citizen
Hoover is a Bristle Nose Plecostomus that was purchased by our Youth Services Librarian’s daughter in 2009. He lived happily in his tank but got lonely when he was the only fish left. He moved into the old Library’s fish tank in 2015 and then moved to his new home when the new library opened in October 2024.
The Children’s Librarian is currently holding an activity called “Where’s Hoover?”. “Can you find Hoover, our 16-year-old Plecostomus? He is hiding in our fish tank! Take a picture of him and tag the library when you post it on social media.
Hoover’s presence is a cherished part of the library experience. At 16 years old, Hoover has well exceeded the average lifespan of his species, which is typically around 12 years, making him the library’s official senior citizen. Be sure to say hello to Hoover during your next visit.
