NDOT Bridge Repair Project on Kennedy Freeway Set to Begin Next Week
Motorists traveling through Bellevue and surrounding areas should prepare for long-term lane reductions as the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) begins major bridge and roadway repairs along U.S. Highway 75 / Kennedy Freeway next week.
According to NDOT, work is scheduled to begin May 4 on US-75 between Reference Posts 79 and 83 in Sarpy County. The project will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction throughout construction, with work expected to continue until Winter 2026.
The project, identified as “US-75 Bridges, Bellevue Phase 2”, includes repairs to six bridges along approximately 2.45 miles of highway between mile markers 80.03 and 82.48. Construction may begin or extend approximately 600 feet beyond the official project limits to allow for pavement transitions, bridgework, and guardrail updates.
NDOT says the work will include pavement and bridge repairs, culvert work, grading, replacement of approach slabs, and guardrail improvements. Traffic will be maintained throughout construction using lane restrictions and temporary traffic control devices.
The bridges included in the project are:
- Northbound and southbound bridges over Big Papillion Creek
- Northbound and southbound bridges over Capehart Road
- Northbound and southbound bridges over Mud Creek, the Union Pacific Railroad, and South 15th Street/Hogantown Drive
The purpose of the project is to preserve transportation infrastructure, improve system reliability, and maintain mobility for the traveling public. NDOT said the repairs are necessary due to the condition of the existing bridge structures.
No grade raises are anticipated, and no work will occur within the waterway of Big Papillion Creek.
Traffic Impacts and Detours
The project will be constructed under traffic, but drivers should expect delays and lane restrictions throughout the work zone.
Additional temporary impacts may include:
- Lane closures on South 15th Street/Hogantown Drive beneath the structure during work on Pier 3 of the Mud Creek/UPRR bridge
- Temporary impact to access at the southbound entrance ramp of the Capehart Road interchange during phased repairs on the Big Papillion Creek bridge
A designated detour will be provided using the northbound US-75 entrance ramp at the Nebraska Highway 370 (N-370) interchange.
Sidewalk access along South 15th Street/Hogantown Drive will remain open at all times and will be protected during construction.
Property and Environmental Considerations
No additional property acquisition will be required for the project. Access to nearby properties will be maintained during construction, though temporary limitations may occur due to phasing requirements.
Minor wetland and water resource impacts are anticipated, but mitigation is not expected to be necessary. Nearby recreational areas—including Willow Springs Park, Keystone South Trail, Willow Lakes Golf Course, Twin Ridge II Park, Capehart Road Trail, and Tregaron Golf Course—are not expected to be impacted.
Project Cost
The estimated cost of the project is approximately $4.4 million, funded through a combination of federal and state sources.
