Do you shop on Amazon? Chances are if you don’t, your neighbor does. Amazon is the largest online retailer in the world with 2021 net sales of around $470 billion dollars. However, a lot of Amazon shoppers don’t realize that the online giant offers a charitable giving program that helps support many local nonprofits.
The Amazon Smile Program has been up and running for ten years and to date, they have given over $377 million to charities worldwide. While it’s a staggering amount of money, it’s only a fraction of what they could have given, if all of their shoppers were using Amazon Smile.
The Amazon Smile program gives back 0.5% of your purchases to the nonprofit of your choice. Most well-known Bellevue nonprofits are listed as an option – as well as some Bellevue nonprofits you may not have heard of before (see partial list below). While 0.5% may not seem like much (and it isn’t), it’s the strength-in-numbers approach that can really make a difference for our local nonprofits.
In 2021 alone, if all of the $470 billion spent on Amazon were also a part of the Amazon Smile Program, over $2.4 billion would have been donated to charity – In just 2021 alone.
Quick steps to get started:
- Go to smile.amazon.com
- Search for and select your favorite charity from the list (there are many options for Bellevue nonprofits – see partial list below)
- Download the Amazon App on your smartphone
- Open the App and Select the “Hamburger Menu” from the bottom right corner (Hamburger Menu is the term for when you see three, short horizontal lines grouped together)
5. Scroll down and select Settings
6. Select Amazon Smile
7. Select Turn On Amazon Smile
And that’s it. Your phone should now be set up to donate to the charity of your choosing every time you purchase something from Amazon.
