Katie Herbert devoted 31 years to the students of Bellevue Public Schools before retiring last May. Just a few months into retirement, she realized she needed something to do. Instead of starting a hobby or binge-watching TV, Herbert created a business called My Ol’ Friend.

According to Herbert, My Ol’ Friend provides safe and reliable transportation for senior citizens in the community. However, she is quick to point out that she provides more than just getting a person from one place to another. “If people need one-on-one help with groceries or other shopping, or if they want to catch a movie or a new restaurant opening and their friends are busy, I can help,” Herbert said.

Herbert’s mother is the inspiration for My Ol’ Friend, “Years ago, Mom was going through some health issues. We brainstormed ways to get her to the doctor that would be safe and would not require an app, because my Mom wasn’t comfortable using technology.”

Herbert said her 31 years of teaching experience have helped her with the business, “The years of experience has equipped me with a deep understanding of warmth, compassion, and the ability to handle various situations with care and responsibility. People need someone they can trust with their elderly family members.”

Herbert also discussed how her service is different than Uber or Lyft. Appointments are made with the idea of not rushing the client. A trip to the grocery store can vary in length, especially if there is an opportunity to play cards and share a few stories. Herbert also makes time for a short meet and greet before the first ride is scheduled so that the clients feel safe, secure, and comfortable before they get in the car.

My Ol’ Friend is personalized for each individual. Herbert shared, “Every senior is unique, and their needs vary. I have taken clients to medical appointments, grocery stores, hair appointments, and out to lunch. I have also enjoyed playing cards and enjoying afternoon tea (in fancy Christmas China) while sharing stories with my new friends.”

The name My Ol’ Friend is a nod to Herbert’s father.  “Whenever you needed a buddy, a friend, or a helping hand, he was there with a wink and a smile,” Herbert said. “I hope to carry on that tradition into my second act with My Ol’ Friend.”

Herbert has multiple ways to connect with her for more information or to book a ride. The My Ol’ Friend website is at https://my-ol-friend.com while her Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/myolfriend. Herbert can also be reached by calling (402) 915-1062.
