On Monday, April 24th, LeMay Elementary sixth graders will be participating in a STEM event focusing on the creation and launch of hot air balloons. The construction of the balloons will begin at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to the final launch at 1:00 p.m. at Bellevue Public Schools Lied Activity Center.

LeMay Elementary teacher Kayla Kill first explored the possibility of giving students the opportunity to learn how to be problem solvers, prepare for jobs in the future, be creative with limited resources, and work with peers in small groups.  Working with Dr. Meredith Mohanty, principal, and Dr. Nicole Smith, instructional coach, the event is scheduled with volunteers from across the district and Bellevue/Offutt community.

The event will include the building of balloons utilizing just tissue paper and glue, launching the creations and learning from guest speakers, Col. Ericka Flanigan, from Offutt Air Force Base, and balloonist Dr. Matt Fenster, Director of Special Education with Bellevue Public Schools.

“I hope students learn more about how hot air balloons work, and enjoy collaborating with their classmates on making a fantastic balloon,” stated Kayla Kill.
