Golden Bowl officially reopened its doors December 1. The popular local restaurant closed for repairs on July 8, 2021. According to co-owner John Stevens, the original plan was to close in July and reopen in mid-to-late August. As the weeks turned into months, many were concerned that the restaurant was permanently closed.
The road to repairs began last February. During the month, snow began to accumulate on the roof of the restaurant. One evening after close, Mr. Stevens was working in his office and heard a loud crash. He ran out to find that part of the roof collapsed from the weight of the snow. After they patched things up and braced the roof, plans were made to close in the summer.
What was the reason for the long delay? The biggest factor was that the amount of damage done to the building was much more severe than originally estimated. Mr. Stevens mentioned more interior work had to be done, including the complete replacement of one of their dining room walls.
The project might have taken even longer, but Mr. Stevens credits local government officials for helping to expedite matters. “Mayor Rusty Hike, Mike Christensen (Chief Building Inspector), Jim Ristow (City Administrator), and Mark Elbert (Community Development Director) helped us out so much. They worked with us to figure things out with our contractor and showed us how to complete the job the right way. I can’t thank them enough.”
In addition to offering take out and delivery orders again, December 1 marks the first day that the Golden Bowl dining room has been open since the initial Coronavirus shutdown in March of 2020.
