At a May city council meeting, the city entered into an agreement with Lamp Rynearson Associates to provide design engineering services for an area south of DJ’s Dugout. If all goes well, the city could begin a planned extension of 23rd Street just south of Cornhusker by the end of the year.

Currently, 23rd Street dead-ends near the southeast corner of DJ’s Dugout. The extension plan calls for 23rd Street to continue south for a short stretch, then turn west and connect to 25th Street, effectively providing at least a little relief from the daily Cornhusker congestion.

In this map of the area, the brown line shows roughly where the proposed 23rd Street project will extend and connect to 25th Street.

According to Bellevue City Administrator Jim Ristow, this has been in the works for a while, but several barriers to completing the extension exist. “What complicates the project is there are big power lines right in the area and we have to work our way through that,” said Ristow. “The engineering firm is working to help us understand how to best handle that situation.”

Ristow went on to say that, once connected to 25th Street, the road will also provide a new entrance to get to Menards (via Pratt Avenue) and all of the other services over there.

When the street extension is completed, the No Outlet sign currently on 23rd Street will come down.
