Bellevue University to Host Golden Music Orchestra on September 12

Bellevue University will help celebrate Mexican independence with a special musical performance by the Golden Music Orchestra from Durango, Mexico on Sept. 12, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. 

The free event is open to the public. It will be held on the University’s main campus in the Hitchcock Humanities Center, 1040 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska 68005. Attendees can enjoy a photographic display and light appetizers from 11 a.m. to noon. The orchestra will perform in the Criss Auditorium from noon to 1 p.m.

Golden Music is a 14-member versatile Duranguense group that began in 2017. Since its founding, the group has had the opportunity to share the stage with artists of national and international stature such as Las Flans (2017), Napoleón (2018), Ha-Ash (2019), and Maria León and Motel ( 2022).

After their performance at Bellevue University, members will perform at several other locations in Nebraska and Iowa. 

According to Socorro Carerra, Global Relationship Specialist for the University, “Bellevue University is excited to host this event. We hope the public will join us for what will be a true celebration of our diverse community.”

Consul of Mexico Maria Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar and Bellevue University President Dr. Mary Hawkins will deliver brief comments at the event. 

El Grito traditionally takes place every year on the night of September 15. The event initiates the ceremonies of Mexican Independence Day, which continues on September 16.

OPPD’s Javier Fernandez Will Be Featured Speaker at Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon

Bellevue University’s Hispanic Heritage Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 29, will feature Javier Fernandez, President and CEO of OPPD as the guest speaker.

Hispanic Art Center of Omaha will provide entertainment at the luncheon. 

According to Gina Ponce, the University’s Director of Latino Outreach, the event is an ideal way to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. In the United States. “The community and conversation at this luncheon gives us the opportunity to recognize the significant contributions that Hispanic Americans have made to our country’s history, culture and achievements.”

Javier Fernandez, President & CEO of Omaha Public Power District, will be the keynote speaker at Bellevue University’s Hispanic Heritage Luncheon on Sept. 29, 2022.

The luncheon runs from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and will be held in the garden level of the John B. Muller Administrative Services Building at 812 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska 68005.

Fernandez leads the state’s largest public utility and has served in various executive roles in companies across the nation. He currently serves as a Board Member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Omaha Branch; the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce; Habitat for Humanity Omaha; and Bellevue University.
