Bellevue Fire Department Provides Reminders for a Safe Winter

Bellevue Times | Bellevue Fire Department Provides Reminders for a Safe Winter | November 21, 2024

With us all being right in the middle of winter, measurable snow is always a strong possibility. We would like to provide some more winter safety tips to ensure everyone is safe during winter, especially when it snows.

When you are driving in the snow and ice, please decrease your speed and remember to allow more time to stop.  When you are shoveling snow remember to stay warm and hydrated.  Take breaks if you aren’t feeling well and get inside where it’s nice and warm.  Check on your elderly neighbors to see if they need anything, especially if we have a large amount of snow limiting travel.

If you have a fire hydrant in front of your house, we would be very appreciative if you were to dig out the hydrant while shoveling your driveways/sidewalks.  During a fire, the fire can double in size every 30 seconds.  Our fire trucks only carry a limited amount of water on them (750 gallons), so getting access to the fire hydrant in a timely manner is crucial.  If the firefighters have to dig it out, it delays getting water to the engine and fire and also takes a firefighter away from other duties involved in fighting the fire or rescue.
